Bloomberg reported that according to preliminary results from the Boca Chica region's election website, southern Texas, residents in the area around the site voted with 173 votes in favor and only 4 against, showing almost absolute support for Elon Musk's efforts to establish a new city.
Most residents in this large area are SpaceX employees or their family members. In the same vote, voters also selected those holding the first election positions of Starbase - all three of whom are current or former employees of SpaceX and have no competitors.
The city's founding does not mean Elon Musk has every right to impose regulations at his disposal, but the move gives the company greater autonomy in coordinating local development speed. The new city committee will have the right to manage planning, construction and other daily issues in the area.
Over the past 7 years, SpaceX has transformed the Boca Chica area - once a peaceful retirement community - into a bustling production hub serving the development of Starship missiles, the vehicle that Musk expects to realize the dream of sending people to live on Mars.
However, SpaceX still struggles to provide enough housing for hundreds of employees who want to live near the company's headquarters. A recent proposal to build more townhouses has been rejected by the district government.
There are currently about 260 SpaceX employees living in this area, and when counting their relatives, the population is nearly 500 people. In addition, about 3,100 other employees have traveled from Brownsville or surrounding areas to work.
The image of Starbase reminds many people of a science fiction film studio, with modern production facilities, neat synchronized rows of houses and a giant bronze half- body statue of Elon Musk standing out in the area.
