The US press reported that former Director of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation ( FBI) James Comey was officially prosecuted by a jury at the Eastern District Court of Virginia on September 25.
The charges against him include false statements and obstructions of justice, stemming from a statement to the Senate Judicial Committee in September 2020 in a case known as "Russiagate 2020".
Russiagate was a major political scandal in the US that broke out in 2016 and continued for many years afterwards. The case involves allegations that Donald Trump's campaign colluded with Russia to influence the 2016 US presidential election.
In 2017, the FBI and then Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller conducted an investigation. The US press and the Democratic Party call it a Russiagate.
After that, Senate hearings (especially in 2020) continued to clarify whether senior officials, including former FBI Director James Comey, abused their authority when investigating Mr. Trump.
During the September 2020 hearing, Mr. Comey denied allowing anonymous leaks to the press regarding Donald Trump's 2016 campaign investigation. However, prosecutors said the denials were untrue.
Chief executive Pamela Bondi wrote on social network X: No one is above the law. Today's indictment shows the Department of Justice's commitment to holding those in power accountable to the American people.
Mr. Comey served as FBI Director from 2013 until he was fired by Mr. Trump in 2017. Over the years, he has become the focus of Republican criticism, especially his role in the so-called Russiagate - accusing Trumps 2016 campaign of colluding with Russia.
For too long, degraded leaders have policylized law enforcement, seriously eroding public confidence, emphasized FBI Director Kash Patel. Nowhere is this transformation more obvious than Russiagate - a dark chapter that we continue to investigate and expose.
Shortly after his re-election earlier this year, President Trump launched a comprehensive investigation into the origin of Russiagate. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard was given the task of leading and she repeatedly declared that she would "go all the way" what she described as a "terssion to undermine the 2016 election results".
Since mid-July, Gabbard has published a series of documents, showing a network of senior officials under Trump and organizations associated with billionaire George Soros are suspected of colluding to accuse Trump of collision with Russia.
Meanwhile, Russia has repeatedly denied interfering in the US election, calling Russiagate a product of the factional struggle. This scandal not only caused internal division in Washington's policies, but also pushed US-Russia relations down, leading to sanctions, asset freezes and a sharp decline in diplomatic cooperation.
