Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia on November 17 for crimes against humanity related to the suppression of the country's student rebellion last year.
The three judges of the Bangladesh International Criminal Court sentenced Hasina to charges of inciting, ordering murder and failing to intervene in brutal acts, which were carried out when sheikh Hasina overseeed last year's crackdown on anti-government protests.
Reading the verdict before the court, Golam Judge Mortuza Mozumder said that former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina "reported to commit crimes against humanity by ordering the use of drones, helicopters and deadly weapons".
The multi-month trial tried and sentenced Ms. Sheikh Hasina in absentia.
Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina pleaded not guilty and accused the trial of being politically motivated. Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh in August last year and lived in captivity in India.
