The Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed into a school campus in the capital Dhaka on July 21 due to a technical problem shortly after takeoff.
The F-7 BGI took off at 1:06 p.m. local time, from the Bangladesh Air Force base in Kurmitola, Dhaka, during a regular training mission, but encountered a technical problem, Bangladesh army spokesperson Sami Ud Dowla Chowdhury said.
According to him, the pilot tried his best to move the plane out of the densely populated area. However, the plane crashed into a 2-storey building at Milestone College.
At least 19 people died and 164 were injured in the tragedy. The pilot was among the dead in the incident. A committee has been set up to investigate the cause of the incident.
According to Jane's Information Group, the F-7 BGI is the final and most advanced version of China's Chengdu J-7/F-7 aircraft. Bangladesh signed a contract to purchase the 16 aircraft in 2011 and completed the delivery in 2013.
Video recording the aftermath of the accident shows a large fire near the grass with a dense column of smoke and crowds watching from afar.
Firefighters sprayed water on the deformed fuselage after hitting a building next to it, damaging the iron bars and creating a large hole.
The incident occurred more than a month after an Air India plane crashed into a dormitory of a medical college in Ahmedabad, India, killing 241 of the 242 people on board and 19 people on the ground.
