As millions of students across China take the annual university entrance exam (gaokao) starting this weekend, forecasters have warned of severe weather conditions such as hot weather and heavy rain.
According to the China Meteorological Administration, a heat wave is covering northern China. From June 5-9, the temperature will skyrocket to over 35 degrees Celsius in Beijing, Tianjin and some provinces of Hebei, Son Tay, Xi'em Tay, Ha Nam and Son Dong. In some areas, temperatures could reach 38 to 40 degrees Celsius, with temperatures expected to gradually decrease from Friday, June 9.
According to the Beijing Meteorological Station, June 5 was the first day of the year that the city recorded a high temperature exceeding the threshold, with an orange warning - the second highest temperature warning level in China's warning system - officially issued.
Temperature in the plains in Beijing has exceeded 36 degrees Celsius, in some places even reaching more than 38 degrees Celsius.
In neighboring areas in the north, Ha Bac province is also experiencing severe heat with temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius. The orange high temperature warning continues to be maintained.
Van Thanh city in Son Tay province, bordering Hebei, was also affected by this severe heat wave. The temperature was recorded at 37 degrees Celsius.
In Truy Bac city, Son Dong province, when the temperature exceeded 37 degrees Celsius, the local government deployed water sprayers and specialized vehicles with fog sprayers to effectively reduce road surface temperatures.
In contrast to the hot weather in the north, heavy rain and thunderstorms will appear in the south and east of China from June 6, expected to last until June 10. Heavy rainfall in some areas, including some provinces of Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hunan and Guizhou, may exceed 160 mm.
Authorities recommend that students and their families take the exam to prepare, especially in areas with heavy rain and high temperatures.
In Vietnam, the 10th grade entrance exam takes place on June 7-8. On June 7, the area from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen and most of the North will have hot weather, with common high temperatures of 35-37 degrees Celsius, some places above 37 degrees Celsius. Some places recorded temperatures above 38 degrees Celsius such as Ma River (38.1 degrees Celsius), Tuong Duong (38.4 degrees Celsius), Dong Ha (37.8 degrees Celsius)...
On June 8, the Northeast and Hoa Binh will have local heat, the highest temperature is 35-36 degrees Celsius, some places above 36 degrees Celsius.
On June 8-9, the area from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen will continue to have hot weather, some places will have severe heat, the common high temperature will be 35-37 degrees Celsius, some places will be over 38 degrees Celsius.
On June 8, the convective cloud area causing rain is likely to expand to some districts in Hanoi.
