The strong earthquake shook southern and central Mexico, disrupting President Claudia Sheinbaum's first press conference in the new year when the earthquake alarm sounded.

People and tourists in Mexico City and Acapulco flocked to the streets when the earthquake occurred.
Information from the US Geological Survey said that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 35km, about 4km north-northwest of Rancho Viejo, Guerrero, in the mountains about 92km northeast of Acapulco.
President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke with Governor Guerrero Evelyn Salgado about the earthquake, in which the governor said that no serious damage had been recorded.
Dr. Jose Raymundo Diaz Taboada, who lives in the area of one of the peaks surrounding Acapulco, said he heard a loud bang and all the dogs in the residential area started barking.
Right then, an earthquake warning rang out on my mobile phone. Then, the tremors began to become stronger with a lot of noise" - he said.
He said he could not contact some friends living along Costa Chica, southeast of Acapulco because the transmission was interrupted.
