The European Environmental Committee (EMSC) said that an earthquake occurred near the famous resort of Rhodes (Turkey) at 2:17 (local time) on June 3. The center of the concussion was determined to be 29km north of Rhodes and located at a depth of 68km.
According to local reports, the earthquake killed at least one person in Turkey and injured dozens others as a panic attack on buildings.
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said the unfortunate victim of the earthquake was a 14-year-old boy who was in the resort town of Fethiye. Although he was taken to the hospital immediately after being injured, the victim still did not survive.
The remaining injured people were also taken to the hospital and are undergoing treatment.
The area that had just had an earthquake then continued to experience many aftershocks, ranging from 2.2 to 2.9 degrees, with the center of the earthquake near Mugla and Rhodes.
Some Greek islands were also slightly affected as many earthquakes were felt in the south of the southeastern European country.
Some tourists in the Greek islands said they were awakened by the powerful shaking. Its no stranger to wake up on the fifth floor of Rhodes while the building was shaken by an earthquake, wrote social media user X Steven.
Meanwhile, another tourist commented: "It felt super real when the whole hotel shook". Author Emma Heatherington shared: Just experienced an earthquake on the last night of the holiday in Rhodes! Too crazy".
However, the impact of the earthquake in the early morning of June 3 was assessed not too serious compared to an area that often faces earthquakes like Turkey - located on two large geological faults.
On February 6, 2023, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake, followed by another strong aftershock, claimed at least 53,000 lives in Turkey and destroyed a series of buildings and roads in 11 southern and southeastern provinces of the country. About 6,000 people have also died in neighboring Syria.
In April this year, about 236 people were injured after jumping out of their homes in panic due to a 6.2-magnitude earthquake that shook Istanbul. Many people were forced to spend the night outdoors due to continued strong aftershocks.
