The earthquake occurred at 7:47 p.m. on May 3, local time. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake occurred about 56 km south of Whites City, New Mexico. The area is between the cities of Midland and El Paso in Texas.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 6.5 km below the Earth's surface.
The USGS said that because the area is sparsely populated, few residents are affected.
The earthquake was part of a series of 46 minor earthquakes that have occurred in the area since early April, according to USGS data. There is a 65% chance of a strong aftershock within a week.
No injuries were reported in the latest series of earthquakes in the US.
