On January 1, 2025, the US Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) said it was monitoring three notable areas near the East Sea.
Area A (northwest Borneo): Showery activity associated with the low pressure area in the South China Sea, northwest of Borneo, has decreased significantly. Upper wind conditions are not favorable for development, and there is no possibility of a major system forming from this area. The 7-day probability of a low pressure area forming is 0%.
Area B (eastern Mindanao Island, Philippines): Showery activity associated with another weak low pressure area off the eastern coast of Mindanao remains sporadic.
Scatterometer weather forecast data shows that the system is no longer in a closed circulation. Environmental conditions are not favorable for development, and the low pressure is unlikely to strengthen into a storm.
However, this system may bring localized heavy rains to the Philippines in the next 1-2 days. The probability of a low pressure area forming in the next 7 days is 0%.
Area C (west of Manila Bay, Philippines): Another low pressure area is forecast to form west of Manila Bay and Mindoro over the weekend. However, upper-level wind conditions are not favorable for development, and no significant development is expected from this system. The 7-day probability of formation is 0%.
JTWC forecasts that no storms will form in the East Sea in the next 7 days. However, JTWC warns of strong winds off the coast of Vietnam in the area between 9 and 15 degrees north latitude.
The weather forecast bulletin of the Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that the low pressure trough with an axis at about 6-9 degrees north latitude connected to the low pressure area at 1:00 a.m. on January 1, 2025 was located at about 7-9 degrees north latitude; 111-113 degrees east longitude.
At Phu Quy island station, there are gusts of wind level 7; at Huyen Tran station, there are strong winds level 6, sometimes level 7, gusts level 8.
