Strong cold air is forecast to arrive in China in early March, with temperatures dropping sharply by 6 to 10 degrees Celsius.

The latest weather forecast from Xinhua News Agency said that on March 1, the China Meteorological Administration issued a yellow warning for the latest cold front, forecasting temperatures in most areas of China to drop sharply in the next few days.

The China Meteorological Administration noted that from January 1 to March 4, some areas in central and eastern China, as well as the Zhenxi - Tibet Plateau, are expected to have temperatures dropped by 6 to 10 degrees Celsius.

The China Meteorological Administration also issued a yellow alert for heavy fog, warning that visibility in some areas, including the East Sea, the East Sea and the East China Sea, will decrease to less than 1km. Some coastal areas of northeastern China and the East China Sea may see below 500m.

China has a severe weather warning system of four levels, with red being the most severe, followed by orange, yellow and blue.

According to the latest weather forecast from China Daily, the China Meteorological Administration noted that in March, temperatures are forecast to drop sharply and rainfall will begin to increase.

In the first three days of March, a cold front is expected to sweep across central and eastern China, causing temperatures to drop by 6 degrees Celsius to 10 degrees Celsius, with some areas possibly dropping by 12 degrees Celsius to 16 degrees Celsius. Rain, hail and snowfall are expected in northwestern, northern and central China. In Beijing, the sky will be cloudy, with light rain or hail, gusts of wind, and temperatures will gradually decrease.

In southern China, prolonged cold weather, heavy rain and little sunlight can affect agriculture, causing the risk of flooding and landslides in some areas.

Xiao Chan - Deputy Director of the National Climate Center of China - noted that throughout February, China's average temperature was recorded at minus 2.2 degrees Celsius, 0.7 degrees Celsius lower than the average at the same time of the year.

In most areas, except southwestern China and the Tibet Autonomous Region, temperatures have dropped by 0.5 to 2 degrees Celsius below average. Some areas, such as western and northern China, have seen temperatures drop to 4 degrees Celsius.

There were three cold spells in February, the most worrying of which was the cold spell affecting central and eastern China from February 7 to 9, causing temperatures to drop by 5 degrees Celsius to 12 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, the rainfall was lower than the average, the total rainfall nationwide was only 10mm, 30.4% less than normal. Areas such as the central and downstream of the Yangtze River and northwestern China have seen rainfall decrease by 50% to 90%.

China's 2024 Climate Newsletter was also released by the country's weather agency on February 28. "China's average annual temperature hit a new record high amid global warming. The 2024 climate is marked by unusual phenomena and harsh weather," said expert Xiao.

According to the bulletin, China's climate in 2024 is generally warmer and wetter than usual, with severe flooding and storms. Storms rarely appear at the beginning of the year but increase at the end of the year, with strong storms causing strong winds and heavy rain.
