On November 2, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that the country had received new patriot air defense systems from Germany.
On his personal Telegram channel, Mr. Zelensky thanked Berlin and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz personally for their important military support. He wrote that the move helped strengthen Ukraine's "air defense shield".
The announcement confirms Germany's continued implementation of large-scale defense aid commitments to Ukraine. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said on September 29 that Berlin had provided Kiev with three patriot systems and had pledged to provide two more by the end of the year, with support from Norwegian partners.
The latest transfer that Zelensky has just confirmed is part of this commitment.

The addition of patriot systems comes at an extremely important time. The US-made patriot system is one of the world's most advanced mobile air defense systems, capable of intercepting not only aircraft, drones and cruise missiles, but also ballistic missiles and hypersonic missiles - such as Russia's Kinzhal - that other Ukrainian systems cannot shoot down.
Possessing more patriots has significantly strengthened Ukraine's defense network, especially protecting major cities and critical infrastructure.
This support is even more urgent as Russia is said to be intensifying missile and drone attacks targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure ahead of the winter.
Ukrainian officials have previously warned of a harsh winter ahead if the power grid is attacked widely, causing a risk of heating and power outages nationwide.
The addition of modern air defense systems such as patriot is considered a key factor for Ukraine to overcome this difficult period.
Since the conflict broke out, Germany has overcome initial hesitations to become the second largest military aid provider to Ukraine, after the US.
In addition to patriot, Berlin has also provided many other advanced air defense systems such as IRIS-T, Leopard 2 tanks, and a large quantity of ammunition. This move affirms Germany's pillar role in Europe's efforts to support Ukraine's security.
