EU confident to deal with Russia if Ukraine conflict persists

Bùi Đức |

The EU believes it will have more time to improve its defense capabilities to respond to Russia if the conflict in Ukraine drags on.

RT reported that on January 22, the first Defense Commissioner of the European Union (EU), former Prime Minister of Lithuania and known as a hardliner politician with Russia, Mr. Andrius Kubilius, said that the longer the conflict in Ukraine lasts, the more time NATO members have to prepare for a potential military confrontation with Russia.

Mr. Kubilius said that the EU is currently investing 300 million euros (equivalent to 312 million USD) in many cross-border projects to produce ammunition, air defense systems and modern weapons.

Speaking at the annual conference of the European Defense Agency, Mr. Kubilius affirmed that NATO as well as the whole of Europe will not be threatened if Ukrainian missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) continue to be shot down.

The former Lithuanian prime minister urged member states to increase military aid to Kiev to strengthen regional deterrence. He also highlighted Russia's superior weapons production capabilities and called on all delegates to increase defense spending.

Similar statements were made at the conference by European Commission Vice President Kaja Kallas, who said NATO could have become stronger as a result of the conflict in Ukraine.

According to RT, EU officials will continue to face this concern in the future because Donald Trump, who took office as US President on January 20, signed an executive order to suspend all foreign aid, including aid to Ukraine, to reassess the effectiveness of the aid as well as the development of the US.

Russia has always denied Western accusations that Moscow is intentionally threatening the security of European countries, and accused NATO of conducting a proxy war in Ukraine.
