At the invitation of Politburo member and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife, Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru and his wife paid an official visit to Vietnam from April 27-29, 2025.

The visit took place in the context of the strong development of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the world between Vietnam and Japan. The two countries' senior leaders regularly visit and meet at international and regional forums.

The Japanese Prime Ministers have visited Vietnam a total of 12 times. The General Secretary visited Japan 4 times; the President visited Japan 4 times; the Prime Minister visited Japan 21 times, of which Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh visited 3 times; the National Assembly Chairman visited Japan 5 times.

Japan is an ODA sponsor and the largest labor cooperative partner, the third largest investor, and the fourth largest tourism and trade partner of Vietnam.

In 2024, Vietnam's total import-export turnover with Japan will reach 46.2 billion USD, an increase of 2.7% compared to 2023; of which Vietnam's exports will reach 24.6 billion USD, imports from Japan will reach 21.6 billion USD.

As of January 31, 2025, Japan has 5,512 valid projects with a total registered investment capital of 78.3 billion USD, ranking 3rd among 149 countries and territories investing in Vietnam. Vietnam has 124 investment projects in Japan with a total registered capital of 20.4 million USD.

The visit of Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru and his wife to Vietnam is an opportunity to bring the Vietnam - Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership into a new stage of development in the new era.
