Tour guide sets a record for conquering Mount Everest 32 times

The Nepalese male tour guide continues to break personal records at the world's highest mountain Everest.

The famous Nepalese Sherpa guide - Mr. Kami Rita Sherpa - has conquered Mount Everest for the 32nd time, continuing to break the record set by himself earlier.

According to the Nepal Tourism Authority, Mr. Kami Rita Sherpa (56 years old) reached the summit of 8,848.8m high at 10:12 am on May 17 while leading a group of tourists from 14 Peaks Expedition company.

This agency congratulated him on his "historical milestone" achievement and acknowledged his contribution to promoting mountaineering tourism.

On the same day, 52-year-old Sherpa guide Lakhpa also completed her 11th Everest conquest, becoming the woman with the most climbs to this peak. Detailed information about the journeys has not been released.

Mr. Kami Rita Sherpa was born in Thame village in Solukhumbu district, the hometown of Mr. Tenzing Norgay. Mr. Norgay and New Zealand mountaineer Sir Edmund Hillary were the first to conquer Everest in 1953.

Mr. Kami Rita first climbed Mount Everest in 1994 and maintains his annual climbing record, except for 2014, 2015 and 2020 when expeditions were suspended for various reasons. There were years when he climbed Mount Everest twice.

Since Everest was first conquered, more than 8,000 people have climbed this mountain, many of whom have done it many times.

In the group of non-Sherpa athletes, British instructor Kenton Cool holds the record with 19 Everest climbs, followed by two American mountaineers Dave Hahn and Garrett Madison with 15 times. Mr. Kenton Cool and Mr. Garrett Madison are also currently at Everest to find ways to improve their performance.

Guiding international visitors to climb Mount Everest and other peaks is an important source of income for many Sherpas in Solukhumbu, where Mount Everest is located.

Nepalese authorities have issued 492 Everest climbing permits for the climbing season from March to May this year. This month, 3 Nepalese climbers died on the mountain.
