Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi rejected the economic sanctions plan announced by US President Donald Trump against Tehran, calling it a continuation of "failed policies" and saying it would only bring Washington "another failure".
The 'Economic D-Day' campaign is a diversion from the US crisis itself: unprecedented debt and skyrocketing interest expenses. Doubling failed policies will only lead to greater failure - along with the hatred of the Iranian people," Mr. Araghchi wrote on social network X.
US economic terrorism threatens the global economy and the sovereignty of countries around the world," the Iranian Foreign Minister stated.
Previously, on the Truth Social platform, Mr. Trump declared the launch of "the most brutal economic campaign ever conducted against any nation", describing it as "economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale".
Any country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports or government agencies to provide any form of salvation to Iran will face terrible economic consequences," the US President wrote.
War between Iran and the US broke out on February 28 with attacks from the US and Israel, followed by Iran's retaliatory blows across the region. The ceasefire on August 8 ended the period of fierce bombardment, but sporadic clashes continued in and around the Strait of Hormuz - a vital energy transport route that Iran has blockaded and since then has become a hotspot of the conflict.
Reopening this strait is a US priority. However, Iran insists that the waterway will continue to be closed until Washington lifts the naval blockade on Iranian ports, lifts oil sanctions and releases Iranian assets abroad.
Mr. Trump has long pursued a "maximum pressure" policy with economic sanctions against Iran, and has restored these measures after taking office in January 2025, similar to the approach in his first term.
For its part, Iran has repeatedly rejected the effectiveness of the sanctions program, affirming that such measures and threats will not force the country to change its course.
