The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on social network X on July 28: "At 5 pm, ET time today (4:45 am on July 29, Hanoi time), the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards launched many ballistic missiles from Iran in a surprise attack on US forces stationed in the Middle East.
The statement stated: "All Iranian missiles have been successfully intercepted". However, CENTCOM did not specify which area was attacked by Iran.
Iran's latest attack on US forces in the Middle East ended the period of temporary calm in the fighting between the parties.
Both sides ceased fire throughout the weekend, after nearly 2 weeks of the US continuously attacking Iran at night and Tehran continuously launching missiles and drones aimed at Washington's allies in the Gulf.
Fighting broke out in mid-July after Iran attacked several ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Oil prices fell sharply after a period of temporary calm in fighting at the weekend and when US President Donald Trump said there was a good opportunity to make progress in negotiations to end the conflict.
