At least 22 people were killed and 117 injured in Israeli airstrikes on two areas in central Beirut on the evening of October 10, Lebanon's Ministry of Health said. The airstrikes also completely collapsed a building.
An AP photographer who visited the scene of the airstrike said the first strike in the Ras al-Nabaa area appeared to have hit the lower half of an eight-story apartment building and that explosions had occurred inside. A large number of ambulances were at the scene.
The second airstrike in the Burj Abi Haidar area collapsed an entire building and the building was engulfed in flames.
In recent weeks, Israel has carried out more airstrikes on Beirut's southern suburbs and fewer strikes on central Beirut.
Following the airstrikes, Hezbollah's Al Manar TV reported that an Israeli attempt to kill Wafiq Safa - a senior security official of the group - had failed. Safa was not inside any of the buildings that were attacked.
Meanwhile, in southern Lebanon, the United Nations peacekeeping force said an Israeli tank fired on its headquarters in the town of Naqoura. Israeli fire aimed at the UN peacekeeping headquarters hit an observation tower and injured two peacekeepers who were hospitalized.
