Early-season cold air spreads across Asia, winter is forecast to come early

Thanh Hà |

Cold air is affecting Asia, including Vietnam. In China and South Korea, forecasters predict the possibility of winter coming early.

The latest cold air forecast from the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said that temperatures in the southern suburbs of Beijing fell to a low of -0.5 degrees Celsius on October 20, marking the first time the Chinese capital recorded temperatures below freezing since the beginning of the fall.

The current forecast shows that the cold air mass affecting northern China is relatively strong and will have a lasting impact.

Beijing's daily temperatures are forecast to remain below 10 degrees Celsius for seven consecutive days, from October 18 to October 24.

The Beijing Meteorological Station has issued a blue warning for cold spells and strong winds since October 16, calling on people to take precautions before the cold spell early.

Xin - Head of the Meteorological Department at the China Meteorological Network - said that although the first time temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius this year appeared at the same time as last year, it was significantly earlier than the long-term average of November 8, based on data from 1991 to 2020.

Ms. Xin Xin note, if the current persistent low temperature continues, this winter could come much earlier.

The cold air mass from the north caused the first cold spell of winter in Korea on October 20, with the morning of October 20 considered the coldest since the beginning of the season.

According to the Korea Meteorological Agency (KMA), the temperature on the morning of October 20 was at the lowest level of 2 to 14 degrees Celsius. The lowest temperature in the morning dropped to a figure in most of the inland areas of the country's central region, including 5 degrees Celsius in Seoul and Daejeon, 4 degrees Celsius in Cheorwon, Gangwon and 2 degrees Celsius in Paju, Gyeonggi. The highest temperature in the afternoon ranges from 12 to 22 degrees Celsius.

The cold air mass flowing into South Korea also leads to early-season snowfall. Rain is forecast to turn to snow at an altitude of over 1,200m in northern Gangwon, with up to 1cm of snow accumulated.

The sharp drop in temperatures in South Korea is believed to be due to the expanding strong continental high pressure system, pushing the cold northwest winds into the Korean peninsula.

This cold spell is expected to last for several days in South Korea. The lowest temperature in the morning of October 21 is forecast to drop to 4 degrees Celsius in Seoul and range from 1 to 14 degrees Celsius across South Korea. From October 23, the morning temperature is expected to increase back to about 8 to 10 degrees Celsius, returning to normal season levels. South Korean weather forecasters are also forecasting rain throughout the week in eastern parts of Gangwon.

According to the increased cold air forecast of the Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, on October 20, the cold air has weakly affected the Northeast region of the North. At Bach Long Vy station, there are strong Northeast winds of level 6, sometimes level 7, gusting to level 8.

It is forecasted that from October 20-22, the cold air will be strengthened, affecting other places in the Northeast and North Central regions, then affecting some places in the Northwest and Central Central regions.

From the night of October 20, the Northern region and Thanh Hoa will have cold nights and mornings, and the mountainous areas will be cold.

Hanoi area, sunny days, no rain at night. Cold in the morning and at night. The lowest temperature in this cold air mass is generally 19-21 degrees Celsius.
