According to Yonhap, a Korean Air Force KF-16 fighter jet accidentally dropped 8 MK-82 bombs outside the training area during a live-fire exercise on the morning of March 6. This incident caused serious damage to facilities and injured 7 people, including some serious injuries.
The incident occurred at 10:04 a.m. local time, when the KF-16 was participating in training in the Pocheon area, about 40 km north of the capital Seoul. Instead of falling into the military training ground as planned, the 8 bombs were dropped outside the safe area, falling onto a road near a residential area.
Local authorities said they received a report at around 10 a.m. the same day when a shell fell on a house in the city.
According to the authorities, the explosion injured seven people. The victims were taken to the hospital for emergency treatment immediately. The bombing also destroyed a church and 6 other structures in the village, causing panic among local people.
After the incident, the South Korean Air Force quickly began investigating to determine the cause of the technical error. In an official statement, the military apologized for the losses to civilians and pledged to take measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Currently, authorities are continuing to clarify the situation and assess the extent of damage. This incident raises many concerns about safety during military exercises, especially when live-fire activities are held near residential areas.
