US continues to attack ship suspected of transporting drugs, 2 people killed

The military campaign against US drug gangs continues to expand, leading to increasingly fierce legal disputes.

The US military announced on August 24 that it had launched an attack on a ship accused of transporting drugs in the Pacific Ocean, killing 2 people.

The US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) said on social network X that the attack took place the day before, targeting a ship "operating along established drug smuggling routes in the Eastern Pacific region".

Confirmed intelligence information shows that the ship is actively involved in drug smuggling. This operation is a clear and decisive reminder that SOUTHCOM is bringing the war directly to the gangs," the agency stated.

The US military launched Operation "Southern Spear" in early September 2025, with President Donald Trump arguing that Washington is actually at war with drug cartels operating from Latin America.

Since then, more than 200 people have been killed in attacks in the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean Sea, according to AFP statistics.

The Trump administration has not provided conclusive evidence that the attacked ships are related to drug trafficking. Legal experts and human rights organizations believe that these attacks may constitute illegal killing, outside of the litigation process.
