US redirects 70 ships, neutralizes 3 ships in naval blockade operation with Iran

The US has diverted 70 ships, neutralized 3 ships and boarded 2 ships for inspection since resuming naval blockade operations against Iran in July.

TASS news agency quoted a statement from the US Central Command (CENTCOM) as saying that US forces have diverted 70 ships since the country resumed naval blockade operations against Iran on July 14.

In an announcement posted on X social network on August 23 (Washington time), CENTCOM said that US forces have neutralized 3 ships and boarded 2 ships for inspection, in addition to 70 ships being diverted. According to CENTCOM, these measures are taken to ensure that ships comply with regulations related to Iran's maritime activities.

The blockade operation was resumed by the US at 4:00 PM on July 14. In the first 24 hours, US forces said they had diverted 2 ships and neutralized 1 ship due to non-compliance with requirements.

The US strengthening control over maritime activities related to Iran takes place in the context of tensions between the US and Iran continuing to affect the transportation route through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the important sea routes for global energy transportation.

Previously, CENTCOM said that the US military had conducted attacks targeting a number of Iranian military targets, including facilities related to naval capabilities and coastal defense. According to the US, these activities are aimed at reducing Iran's ability to threaten commercial transport activities.

The Strait of Hormuz is located between Iran and Oman, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arab Sea. This maritime route plays an important role in the export of oil and gas of Middle Eastern countries, so any disruption in the region can affect energy transportation activities.

In the current tense context, Iran has warned that it may switch to stronger military measures in the Strait of Hormuz if diplomatic efforts with the US do not yield results. The US, meanwhile, continues to maintain blockade and control of ships related to Iran.
