Ngày 3.2 (giờ Mỹ), quân đội Mỹ cho biết đã bắn hạ một UAV (máy bay không người lái) của Iran khi thiết bị này tiếp cận “một cách hung hăng” tàu sân bay Abraham Lincoln trên biển Arab. Sự việc được công bố trong bối cảnh các nỗ lực ngoại giao nhằm sắp xếp đàm phán hạt nhân giữa Mỹ và Iran đang diễn ra.
Theo phía Mỹ, UAV Shahed-139 của Iran bay về phía tàu sân bay với “ý đồ không rõ ràng” và đã bị một tiêm kích F-35 của Mỹ bắn hạ. After the news of the UAV being shot down, future oil prices increased by more than 1 USD per barrel. The Iranian delegation to the United Nations declined to comment on the incident. Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that the country lost contact with a UAV in international waters, but the cause is still unknown.
The Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group is considered the clearest symbol of the US increasing military presence in the Middle East, after the violent crackdown on anti-government protests in Iran, described as the most serious domestic instability since 1979.
US President Donald Trump warned that with US warships heading towards Iran, "bad things" could happen if no agreement is reached, although he said Tehran is "sERIOUSly engaging in dialogue". Iran's top security official, Mr. Ali Larijani, said that negotiation arrangements are underway.
Also on the same day, in the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard force was accused of harassing a US-flagged oil tanker named Stena Imperative. Two Iranian boats and a Mohajer UAV approached the ship at high speed and threatened to board.
The Vanguard Maritime Risk Management Group said the tanker sped away instead of stopping the engine. US warship McFaul then escorted Stena Imperative, causing the situation to cool down and the ship to continue its safe journey.
