RT reported that Russia is believed to have attacked a target in the Lviv region, western Ukraine with Oreshnik - its latest hypersonic medium-range ballistic missile.
A CCTV video shared by RIA Novosti on the night of January 8 shows luminous objects falling into the Lviv region of Ukraine, bordering Poland. These may be a series of directional warheads (MIRVs) falling on targets at extremely high speeds.
Lviv Mayor Andrey Sadovoy said "an important part of the infrastructure" was attacked.
Lviv is the western gateway of Ukraine, located very close to the Polish border - a NATO member.
If confirmed, this will be the second time Russia has used its latest nuclear-capable ballistic missile in Ukraine.
In November 2024, Russia fired an Oreshnik missile at an arms factory in Dnepr in what Moscow called a "successful combat test".
In an official statement sent to Russian people and soldiers via television, Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized that the Oreshnik missile hit a designated target and currently no air defense system in the world can intercept Russian missiles.
The Russian leader revealed that the Oreshnik missile attacked the target at a speed of Mach 10, equivalent to 12,250 km/h, 10 times the speed of sound.
