RT reported that on February 13, US President Donald Trump announced that senior US representatives will meet with Russian officials at the Munich Security Conference (Germany) on February 14 to discuss solutions to the Ukrainian conflict.
The announcement came after a 30-minute phone call between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 12 - the first time the two leaders have met in person since the conflict in Ukraine escalated in February 2022.
Speaking at the White House, Mr. Trump affirmed that the call with his Russian counterpart had created the premise for direct contacts between officials of the two countries. They will meet in Munich tomorrow. Russia will be present with our representatives, Trump said.
Mr. Trump revealed that "Ukraine is also invited", but did not clarify whether this will be a tripartite talks or a series of bilateral dialogues.
I am not sure who will participate from each country, but they will be high-ranking figures from Russia, Ukraine and the US, Trump added.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the event as an important achievement, adding that assistants and relevant ministries will begin the dialogue process.
"The leaders have shown political will and instructed subordinates to start communication. We need to be a little patient, these discussions need time to be motivated" - Mr. Peskov emphasized.
The spokesman said that Russia has begun to establish a group for negotiations with the US, including discussing the situation in Ukraine.
"There is no doubt that the work has begun. As soon as the President makes relevant decisions, we will notify you," Peskov said, when asked whether Russia has begun to form its own negotiation group. Mr. Peskov did not specify who could lead the group, noting that this would be reported after President Putin's relevant decisions.
The Munich Security Conference took place from February 14 to 16 in Germany. US Vice President J.D. Vance will lead the US delegation, expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the summit was an opportunity for the US to " drawn up a broad roadmap" for the Ukrainian issue. Meanwhile, US special missionary on the Ukrainian conflict, Keith Kellogg, is expected to confirm that Washington has no intention of deploying Ukrainian security guards but wants NATO to increase defense spending.
Since 2022, Russia has not attended the Munich Security Conference and Moscow has not yet confirmed whether it will participate or not this year or announce the composition of the delegation.
