Russia successfully tests Sarmat super missile, experts say it changes the nuclear balance

The Russian military successfully tested a heavy intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) using liquid fuel Sarmat on May 12.

Russia has not received any official response from the US after the Sarmat missile launch. "So far, we have not heard any official response" - Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on May 13 (local time).

He said that Russian President Vladimir Putin praised the Sarmat launch. "The President himself has assessed this as a great achievement. This is truly a very important step forward for the whole country and national security in the coming years" - Mr. Peskov shared.

Also according to the spokesman, Russia always informs other countries about missile tests, including Sarmat. "There is a special notification system operating in accordance with international practices," he said.

Regarding Russia's successful test of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) system, Russian Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that the successful test made Russia's Western "friends" more "reachable" to Moscow.

Chairman of the Russian State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin said that the Sarmat test showed that Russia's "nuclear shield" has been strengthened.

Mr. Denis Kravchenko - a member of the State Duma and the Political Bureau of the Supreme Council of the ruling United Russia party - shared with the press that the Sarmat missile system will change the nuclear deterrent balance and create geopolitical impact.

Thai political analyst Rom Phiramontri said that Russia's successful test of a new heavy intercontinental ballistic missile may "strengthen the arguments of European countries supporting peace negotiations as soon as possible".

Mr. Girish Linganna - a defense, aerospace and political analyst in Bengaluru, India - said that the Sarmat missile system with its large size, long range and ability to overcome missile defense shields is a strong signal that Russia sends to the rest of the world. According to him, in Asia, such systems are often seen as a more stable factor than a threat.

Military expert Gianandrea Gaiani - Editor-in-Chief of Analisi Difesa Portal - said that Sarmat and other new missile systems and weapons capable of carrying nuclear warheads show Russia's advantage in the field of strategic deterrence.

He noted that this is not the first time Russia has shown off new weapons. "This is clear evidence that Russia cannot be attacked and this country possesses offensive capabilities that no opponent can defend," the expert added.

Mr. Linganna believes that Sarmat is both a military deterrent and a psychological deterrent.

Mr. Igor Korotchenko - Director of the Center for Analysis of World Arms Trade (CAWAT), Editor-in-Chief of National Defense Magazine - said that the liquid-fueled Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile can "wipe out an entire enemy nation in just one attack".

He pointed out that the Sarmat super missile can carry 10 or more large-capacity nuclear warheads, and is equipped with a complex system to penetrate missile defense shields. The range of this new missile also allows attacking potential targets in both the Arctic and Antarctic.

On May 12, President Vladimir Putin announced that the Sarmat missile has a maximum range of more than 35,000km. Meanwhile, Western analysts estimate the actual maximum range of the missile is only about 18,000km.
