Argentina has ended cooperation with Russia in the field of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

The information was shared by Russian Ambassador to Argentina Dmitry Feoktistov with Russian media. "As far as we know, there is currently no bilateral cooperation in the field of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes" - the Russian diplomat shared.

Nuclear energy cooperation for peaceful purposes is the application of nuclear technology in electricity production, healthcare (radiation therapy, diagnostics), agriculture and industry.

Ambassador Feoktistov also added that Russian and Argentine companies are showing interest in cooperation in the fields of electricity, renewable energy and oil and gas industry.

The agreement between the Russian and Argentine governments on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes was signed in the summer of 2014 and took effect in November 2018.

Also related to Russian nuclear cooperation, Russian media reported that the number of Russian African partners in the field of civil nuclear cooperation is expected to exceed 20. Accordingly, a cooperation agreement between Russia and Djibouti is likely to be signed at the 3rd Russia-Africa Summit in October.

Russia and Djibouti are arranging the signing on the sidelines of the third Russia-Africa Summit, a memorandum of understanding between the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom and the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of the Republic of Djibouti on cooperation in the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes" - the Russian Embassy in Djibouti said.

Djibouti has a coastline to the Red Sea, where Russia also plans to strengthen transport and logistics relations. Djibouti, located on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, currently has large military bases operated by the US, Japan and European countries.

Currently, Rosatom is cooperating with 20 African countries. Rosatom considers Africa a potential market with expected increased electricity demand in the coming decades and the industry will need new energy sources.

To facilitate cooperation with new partner countries, Russia is also strengthening its diplomatic presence throughout Africa. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that Russian embassies in Gambia, Togo and Comoros are about to open.
