CNN reported that on March 3, the Australian Red Cross Lifeblood (Lifeblood) confirmed that James Harrison, one of Australia's largest blood donors, famous for saving the lives of about 2.4 million newborns, passed away at the age of 88.
Mr. Harrison is known as the man with a golden arm for donating blood more than 1,100 times thanks to the rare and valuable antibodies called Anti-D.
Anti-D is used to prepare an injectable drug for pregnant women at risk of the immune system attacking the fetal blood cells, also known as Rhysosome.
This condition occurs when the mother has a negative Rh Rh blood type (RhD negative) while the fetus has a positive Rh blood type (RhD positive), inherited from the father.
If the mother has been exposed to positive Rhino blood - usually due to a previous pregnancy - their immune system can create antibodies that attack the fetus' foreign blood cells. In severe cases, newborns may suffer brain damage or death.
Antimicrobial anti-D from Harrisburg helps prevent this condition by preventing the mother's body from developing RhD antibodies during pregnancy. Australian health officials called the discovery of Harrison's antibodies a turning point.
Harris had previously passed away in his sleep at a nursing home in northern Sydney on 17 February.
He started donating soy sauce at the age of 18 and maintained it every two weeks until he reached the age limit for blood donation - 81 years old, according to Australian law.
Lifeblood CEO Stephen Cornelissen praised James Harrison as an extraordinary person, steadfast in his kindness and generosity.
Mr. Cornelissen emphasized that Mr. Harrison has devoted his entire life to donating blood, touching the hearts of countless people in the world, and said that Mr. Harrison has donated blood tuong lai a total of 1,173 times to help babies he did not know, and did not expect to receive anything back.
Harris' daughter, Tracey Mellowship, calls her father a deep-hearted humanitarian. She was a person who had been vaccinated with Anti-D, so she understood that without her father's valuable blood donations, her family probably wouldn't have been able to survive.
