North Korean state media reported on February 23 that Mr. Kim Jong Un's re-election as leader of the Workers' Party of Korea was made on February 22, the fourth day of the 9th National Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea "in accordance with the steadfast will and aspirations of all delegates".
Under Kim Jong Un's leadership, "the country's ability to deter war with nuclear force as a pillar has been significantly improved," North Korea's state news agency KCNA emphasized.
The Workers' Party Congress of Korea is held every 5 years, giving direction with the efforts of the state in all fields, from housing construction to planning strategic issues.
In his opening speech at the congress on February 19, Mr. Kim Jong Un pledged to improve the living standards of the people.
Today, our Party is facing a heavy and urgent historical task of promoting economic construction and improving people's lives, while transforming all areas of state and social life as soon as possible" - he said.
Since coming to power in 2011, Kim Jong Un has emphasized the need to strengthen North Korea's economy.
