Trump's reason is that Russia remains an unusual and serious threat to US national security.
The United States began to impose sanctions against Russia after the country merged the Crimea peninsula through a 2014 referendum. Punishment measures continued to be expanded after the allegations of Russia interfering with the US presidential election, and especially escalated since the conflict in Ukraine exploded in February 2022.
According to the announcement posted on April 10, 2025 on the website of the US Federal Register, the decision to extend this time is issued under the name: "Continuing a national emergency state related to specific harmful activities of the Russian Federation Government".
The document is largely based on Executive Order 14024 signed by former President Joe Biden in April 2021, which deals with an unusual and serious threat to national security, foreign policy and the US economy allegedly caused by Russia.
Among the harmful activities that Russia has been accused of is attempts to sabotage the organization of free and fair elections as well as democratic institutions in the US and US allies and partners.
Washington also accused Moscow of sabotage of security in countries and regions that are important to US national security, and violating widely recognized international legal principles, including respect for the territorial integrity of states.
At the end of March, President Trump also expressed his disappointment when he said there was still many hesitations between Russia and Ukraine.
He warned that he would impose new sanctions if Moscow was seen as the cause of the failure of ceasefire negotiations related to the conflict in Ukraine.
Responding to the threat, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said last week that dialogue with the US side is still ongoing and that Russia is ready to resolve the Ukrainian conflict through diplomatic channels.
In mid -March, President Trump proposed an order to suspend attacks on energy infrastructure - initiatives that were publicly supported by Moscow and Kiev. However, the Russian side accused Ukraine violating the ceasefire, but still reaffirmed the commitment to maintain a partial communalent agreement, in order to create conditions to promote relations with the United States.
