The White House is streamlining and restructuring the US National Security Council, sources revealed to CBS News on May 23, a few weeks after President Donald Trump replaced national security adviser and gave Secretary Marco Rubio this position of power.
Sources say some of the US National Security Council staff will move to other jobs in the administration. The assistants were informed of some changes at a meeting at the White House on the afternoon of May 23.
JD Vance Vice President's national security advisor Andy Senior, and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Robert Gabriel, will serve as deputy national security advisors to the US National Security Council after the restructuring. Mr. Baker will continue to be an assistant to Mr. Vance, according to a White House official.
To date, about 20 staff members of the US National Security Council have been informed of paid leave and the job transfer will take place next week.
Among those leaving the US National Security Council are: Eric Trager - who was in charge of Iran and the Middle East; Andrew Peek, who handled issues related to Europe. Meanwhile, Deputy National Security Advisor Alex Wong will move to another position in the administration.
The US National Security Council's media group will also be dissolved as part of the restructuring process.
The National Security Council advises the US president on foreign policy and national security issues.
The sudden changes in personnel for the US National Security Council came three weeks after Secretary Rubio took on the role of National Security Advisor, replacing Mike Waltz. Mr. Mike Waltz has been nominated as US Ambassador to the United Nations.
This is the latest personnel change at the US National Security Council during President Trump's second term. Last month, about six employees of the agency were laid off after right-wing media figure Laura Loomer accused them of being unloyal to Trump.
