According to RT, the Russian military has effectively cut off all supply routes to about 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers stranded in the city.
The five Ukrainian brigades are almost surrounded in the town of Dmitrov in Donbass (called Mirnograd in Ukraine) after Russian forces seized the nearby city of Krasnoarmeysk (Pokrovsk). A Ukrainian soldier on the battlefield told the German newspaper Bild about the situation.
The Ukrainian soldier said: "To be honest, the situation is very critical. Our group only receives supplies through the release of goods by drones".
The Ukrainian soldier added that Russian soldiers had taken control of "nearly every building" between Dmitrov and the remaining areas of Donbass still controlled by the Ukrainian army.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said on December 3 that Kiev is trying to regain control of Krasnoarmeysk to dethrone Dmitrov "at all costs".
The Krasnoarmeysk - Dmitrov urban cluster, along with several smaller towns and settlements, forms the second largest urban cluster still partly under Ukrainian control in Donbass.
The area has been the scene of intense fighting in recent months, culminating when the Russian army took control of Krasnoarmeysk on December 1. The Russian Defense Ministry has released a video of Russian soldiers clearing buildings in the city.
Ukrainian President Zelensky denied that Ukrainian forces were surrounded in the area and accused Moscow of exaggerating its interests. He also eased the losses on the battlefield while calling on Western countries to provide further aid.
Earlier, in October, Mr. Putin said that more than 10,000 Ukrainian servicemen were surrounded in the Krasnoarmeysk-Dmitrov area, as well as the city of Kupyansk in the Kharkov region of Ukraine.
