AFP news agency quoted a statement from the Guinean government as saying that heavy rain at night caused a giant landfill in the capital of Guinea, Conakry, to collapse, burying many tents and temporary houses nearby.
The incident occurred at about 3 am (local time) in the Dar-es-Salam residential area, Bbessia district, Conakry suburb, killing at least 30 people and seriously injuring 6 others.
The Guinean government has mobilized many human and material resources to search for those who may still be buried, rescue victims and remove bodies from the scene. Excavators have been mobilized to serve the search and rescue work in the landslide landfill area.
The Guinean government has also implemented measures to ensure medical care for the injured and support victims affected by this accident.
Guinean Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah directly arrived at the scene of the accident.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Balde Mamadou Bailo, a sanitation officer of the Army Engineer Battalion, this landfill was planned to close on August 23. Previously, the Guinean government had asked people to leave the area near the landfill, and at the same time implemented safety measures around this location due to concerns about landslide risks.
