The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Nihon Hidankyo - an organization in Japan of atomic bomb survivors.
The Nobel Committee praised Nihon Hidankyo "for demonstrating, through eyewitness accounts, that nuclear weapons should never be used again".
Nihon Hidankyo, also known as Hibakusha, was founded by survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
"One day, the survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will no longer be witnesses to history. But with a strong culture of remembrance and an ongoing commitment, the next generations in Japan are continuing the experiences and messages of those who witnessed them," the Nobel Committee said when announcing the decision on the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, Norway on October 11.
The 2024 Nobel Peace Prize winner will receive a medal, a diploma and a prize worth 11 million Swedish kronor ($1.1 million).
The Nobel Peace Prize is the fifth Nobel Prize to be awarded this week, following those in Medicine, Physics, Chemistry and Literature.
Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has received 286 nominations for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize, with 89 of the candidates being organizations.
