South Korean court speeds up impeachment proceedings against President Yoon Suk Yeol

On December 27, the Constitutional Court of South Korea held the next hearing on the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol on January 3, 2025.

The second hearing will take place just a week after the first hearing on December 27 for legal representatives of both President Yoon Suk Yeol and the National Assembly to submit a list of witnesses and evidence as well as adjust the date for future proceedings.

The South Korean National Assembly is represented in the trial by the heads of the legislative and judicial committees and other lawyers, while President Yoon Suk Yeol appointed a team of defense lawyers hours before the first hearing.

The Constitutional Court of South Korea stressed that the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk Yeol will be more important than any other case and pledged to speed up the proceedings. The first hearing lasted about 40 minutes.

Also on December 27, South Korean police raided the presidential safe house - where President Yoon Suk Yeol met with senior police officials to discuss plans to impose martial law.

The raid was to secure CCTV footage and identify people who entered the building hours before martial law was declared on December 3.

A simultaneous raid also targeted the Presidential Security Service but investigators were blocked from entering.

President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law on the night of December 3, but the South Korean National Assembly voted to revoke it a few hours later.

President Yoon Suk Yeol stressed that declaring martial law was an act within the president's authority. However, the South Korean National Assembly accused it of being illegal.

The National Assembly passed the impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk Yeol on December 14 and sent it to the Constitutional Court for deliberation for up to 180 days, during which time President Yoon Suk Yeol will be suspended from office.
