China warns party members not to accept online Tet lucky money

Khánh Minh |

The Chinese Communist Party has warned officials and party members not to receive online red envelopes in the form of money during the Lunar New Year.

SCMP reported that the Central Organization Department – the Communist Party of China’s personnel agency – warned that accepting or giving gifts online, especially via the WeChat platform, could violate the “red line” of party discipline, especially when these gifts could affect the fair performance of public duties. Even accepting bribes in the form of online red envelopes will be severely punished.

The move comes ahead of the eight-day Lunar New Year holiday, which begins on January 28. The Communist Party of China has asked party members to remind their families to be careful when receiving online red envelopes, to avoid letting this affect their reputation and work.

The online red envelope function on WeChat - which allows users to transfer money via the app to individuals or chat groups - has become a popular practice during the Lunar New Year in China.

This is a method used by many people to send wishes of luck and fortune, replacing traditional red envelopes.

However, this convenience also makes online lucky money a discreet method of bribery.

China has long waged a vigorous anti-corruption campaign and in recent years has tightened discipline among party members. Any act of accepting gifts, cash, or assets that could influence a civil servant’s work is subject to severe disciplinary action, ranging from reprimand, probation, to removal from party positions.

In particular, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) has repeatedly warned party members to closely monitor their families and subordinates, requiring officials to be strict with themselves and those around them.

Chinese General Secretary and President Xi Jinping also emphasized at a recent meeting that China will continue to step up its anti-corruption campaign in the new year, and warned that if it is negligent in this fight, there will be “catastrophic risks” for the country.

President Xi Jinping has said corruption is the “biggest threat” to the Communist Party of China and urged officials to remain steadfast and determined in their fight against corruption. The fight will be relentless and there will be no mercy for corrupt individuals.
