When asked to comment on the US Supreme Court's ruling that many tariffs imposed by the US government are illegal, a spokesman for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said on February 23 that China consistently opposes all forms of unilateral tax increases.
The spokesperson emphasized that China always opposes unilateral tax increases in any form and has repeatedly affirmed that there is no winner in a trade war, and protectionism leads nowhere.
According to the spokesman, the unilateral measures that the US is applying - including reciprocal taxes and taxes related to fentanyl - not only violate international trade and economic rules but also go against US domestic laws, and do not serve the interests of any party.
The spokesman said that reality shows that cooperation between China and the US benefits both sides, while confrontation harms both. China called on the US to cancel the unilateral tariff measures that have been imposed on trading partners.
We also note that the US is preparing to apply alternative measures such as trade investigations to maintain tariffs on partners. China will closely monitor this development and resolutely protect its legitimate rights and interests," the spokesman said.
Previously, on February 21, the US Supreme Court ruled in a lawsuit related to tariffs, determining that tariffs called "counterfeit taxes", taxes related to fentanyl and other taxes imposed by the US government on trading partners under the International Emergency Economic Power Act are illegal.
