The Ukrainian military has announced the destruction of two bridges located on Russian territory, near the Kharkov border. According to Kiev, these are the routes used by the Moscow military to supply military operations.
The campaign was conducted by the 58th independent Mechanized Infantry Brigade. The unit said it had observed unusual activity around the two bridges and discovered Russian mine and ammunition depots hidden under the bridges. A first-angible drone (FPV) equipped with fiber optic cables has captured images of multiple tarpaulins. After that, the unit decided to attack and detonate all the weapons, causing the bridge in the Belgorod area to collapse.
We saw the mines and we attacked them. After that, continue to check the remaining bridge, also plant mines and destroy it," the Brigade representative shared with the press.
Notably, drones used are only priced at about 25,000 - 30,000 hryvnia (600 - 725 USD), showing a very low cost compared to the efficiency they bring. Under normal conditions, remotely breaking the bridge requires a missile system or aircraft with a cost of tens of millions of USD.
Kiev used to use the HIMARS system provided by the West to attack bridges in the Kursk region, each launcher costing tens of millions of USD, and each missile costing tens of thousands of USD. Taking advantage of Russian mines and cheap drones is considered a creative and economical option.
Western media reported that in the early stages of the conflict in 2022, Ukraine also destroyed bridges on its way to Kiev to slow down the Russian advance. In June, the country used small drones to damage dozens of Russian aircraft at military airports.
Observers say the destruction of the bridge by cheap drones is a symbolic victory, and at the same time shows the ability of the Ukrainian army to respond to the superior Russian force.
Moscow has not yet commented on the attack.
