Instead of hot records, a large part of the Main Development Region (MDR) is clearly cold.
According to FOX Weather's analysis, sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic are currently about 1.1 degrees Celsius lower than the same period last year - a sharp decline that has not appeared in recent years.
Current temperatures are believed to be equivalent to 2019, when major storms such as Dorian and Humberto occurred.
It is noteworthy that although it is still higher than the long-term average in the period of 1982 2010 or 1991-2020, this decrease is a completely opposite sign to the trend of continuous ocean temperatures breaking records in recent storm seasons.
What is causing the Atlantic Ocean to cool down? A key factor is the Bermuda high pressure, which is currently stable and strong in the northeastern part of Bermuda. This pressure block contributes to increasing winter trade winds, promoting the phenomenon of cold water rising from the ocean floor, thereby reducing the temperature of the sea surface.
As a result, many US southeastern coastal areas such as Florida have been hit by severe droughts, rising forest fires and strong coastal flows that are dangerous.

If this continues, the 2025 hurricane season could begin with lower-than-normal temperatures across the Atlantic, something that has not happened in recent years. Low sea temperatures mean the possibility of early typhoon formation (especially from theCOastal area of Cabo Verde, Africa) could be delayed or reduced.
However, other seas such as the southern Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean remain warm enough to support the formation of tropical cyclones. In particular, the Central American Gyre phenomenon a large low pressure area that often appears in late spring and early summer can still play a role in starting early storms, whether active mainly in the western Atlantic or Pacific.
While the current signal could slow the start of the hurricane season, forecasters warn that tropical weather could change dramatically and not follow model forecasts. Therefore, people in areas at risk of being affected by the storm should prepare from now.
The first storm name for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season is Andrea, followed by Barry, Chantal and Dexter - the names chosen to replace Dorian, who was "erased" after the 2019 disaster.
