On March 28, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports held a Workshop to provide comments on the development of a Program for developing key sports to prepare for participation in the Olympics and ASIAD for the 2026-2046 period.
According to Mr. Hoang Quoc Vinh - Head of the High Performance Sports Department (Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports), in each specific period, Vietnamese sports set different goals.
2026 - 2030: Maintain in the top 3 at the SEA Games. At the same time, it entered the top 20 at the ASIAD with specific targets of 5 gold medals at the 2026 ASIAD (shooting, karate, boat racing, cloud bridge), 6 gold medals at the 2030 ASIAD (shooting, archery, karate, boat racing, cloud bridge).
The 2028 Olympics aim to win 2 bronze medals (archery, weightlifting). In particular, men's football is targeted in the top 10 in Asia and women's football is in the top 8 in Asia.
Every year, about 165 -170 key athletes are invested in 17 key sports, with the number including track and field,... shooting (18), archery (9), taekwondo (10), weightlifting (12), boxing (6), boxing (6), boxing (6), fencing (6), cycling,... judo (5), weightlifting (5), swimming (5), badminton (5), racing (34) (4), karate (5), 12 wus (38).
In which, these sports are divided into 2 groups.
Group 1 is a strong sport with the potential to compete for Olympic medals: shooting, archery, weightlifting, taekwondo, boxing, fencing, boat racing, badminton (concentrating on long-term training and coaching abroad for about 100 - 110 athletes).
Group 2 is a potential and likely to compete for medals at the ASIAD: athletics, judo, karate, wushu, gymnastics, weightlifting, swimming, cloud bridge, cycling (combined with domestic training and sending for short-term training and competition abroad under a special regime: 65 - 70 athletes).
2030 - 2036: Maintain in the top 3 at the SEA Games. Continue to maintain in the top 20 at the 20th ASIAD with the target of 7 gold medals at the 2034 ASIAD (shooting, archery, karate, boat racing, cloud bridge, boxing).
The 2032 Olympics strive to win 2 bronze medals (archery, weightlifting); the 2036 Olympics won 1 silver medal, 2 bronze medals (archery, weightlifting, shooting).
In addition, continue to stabilize the group of key sports that have been invested in training in the 2026-2030 period and add new breakthrough content.
2036 - 2046: Maintain in the top 2 at the SEA Games, top 15 at the ASIAD and top 50 at the Olympics. In particular, men's football entered the top 8 in Asia and qualified for the World Cup; women's football in the top 8 in Asia and qualified for World Cups.
Regarding implementation solutions, the Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports will conduct the grouping of key sports as mentioned above, while investing in infrastructure and resources from mobilizing central and local budgets and social resources to modernize the training system.
In addition, aiming to train athletes and coaches in countries with strengths; invite good experts to provide long-term training for 17 key sports.
Regarding the policy of supporting athletes and coaches, the sports industry will improve salary and bonus regimes; improve employment policies after athletes retire; exempt taxes, support finance for businesses to invest in sports...
According to the report of the Department of Physical Education and Sports, the estimated budget for important goals in the period of 2026-2046 is about nearly 4,000 billion VND.
