On match day July 9 (Vietnam time), Arthur Fery defeated Flavio Cobolli after 3 sets with the score 6-4, 7-6, 6-0 in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon 2026.
This is a big surprise result when the British player is only ranked 114th in the world and has never passed the second round in any Grand Slam tournament before this season.
Fery's journey at Wimbledon is also very noteworthy. Before reaching the quarterfinals, the 23-year-old player continuously went through long matches, including 5-set victories against Zizou Bergs and Grigor Dimitrov.
However, when facing Cobolli, Fery showed the most convincing form since the beginning of the tournament. He controlled the game for most of the match time and closed the match after just over two hours. In particular, the British player completely overwhelmed in the third set with a 6-0 white victory.
With this result, Fery became the first player to receive a wildcard to participate in the Wimbledon semi-finals since Goran Ivanisevic won the tournament in 2001 after also being given a wildcard.
Fery also joins the group of British tennis players who have reached the Wimbledon semi-finals such as Tim Henman, Andy Murray and Cameron Norrie.
Unlike the case of Ivanisevic - who received a wild card after dropping in rankings due to injury, Arthur Fery entered Wimbledon 2026 as a young player on the journey to affirm his name.
Notably, before Wimbledon this year, Fery only had 11 wins at the ATP Tour level. According to statistics, only John McEnroe, Aslan Karatsev and Mark Edmondson have reached the Grand Slam semi-finals with fewer ATP wins than the British player.
In the semi-finals, Arthur Fery will face Alexander Zverev. The German player won a ticket to the round for the four strongest players after a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Taylor Fritz and continues to be considered the leading candidate for the Wimbledon 2026 championship.
