After the opening match having to play 5 sets against Miomir Kecmanovic, the world No. 1 player had a more stable performance when defeating Nuno Borges with a score of 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 after 2 hours and 32 minutes on the Central court.
Despite winning with a score of 3-0, Sinner did not have an easy match when Borges (ATP rank 48) created many difficulties, especially in the first two sets. Both maintained effective serving ability, making the game balanced and having to be decided by a tie-break.
The turning point came in the second set when Borges led 5-4 and had a chance to finish the set, but missed a decisive forehand. Sinner then successfully defended his service game, equalizing the score 5-5 before winning overwhelmingly 7-2 in the tie-break. This is also the 10th time he has won a tie-break in the last 12 times.
In the third set, the two players continuously broke each other's serve games in the early stages. However, the bravery of the No. 1 seed helped Sinner quickly regain the game to close the match at the second match-point.
The victory over Borges helped Sinner increase his total number of Grand Slam wins to 95. This achievement puts the 24-year-old player ahead of legend Nicola Pietrangeli to become the Italian male player with the most wins in Grand Slam history.
Speaking after the match, Sinner admitted that this was not an easy match.
The first set was very difficult. Both served well so there were not many long balls. In matches like this, the most important thing is to find a way to win. I am very happy to have two wins on grass here, but there are still many things to improve," Sinner shared.
The Italian player also expressed excitement when competing in front of many golf stars in the stands, including Masters champion Rory McIlroy.
Sinner humorously said that he does not have the golf talent like Carlos Alcaraz and only considers this an entertainment sport.
In the third round of Wimbledon, Sinner will face Jenson Brooksby. The American player qualified for the next round after a victory over Ignacio Buse. The two met in Washington in 2021 and Sinner won after two sets.
Assessing the upcoming opponent, world No. 1 player believes that Brooksby has made significant progress in recent years and predicts this will be a different challenge compared to the previous confrontation.
