Celtic were denied a goal in the first minute after the referee consulted VAR. Bayern then led 2-0 through Olise and Harry Kane. The home team only pulled one goal back through Maeda despite putting up good pressure in the second half.
Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said after the match: “Celtic have lost very few home games in European competitions. So it was a good win for Bayern Munich. We are very strong at home and looking forward to the return leg.
The first few minutes were not ideal for us, but then the team defended with great discipline, even when Celtic added a striker in the last minutes. We played solidly and deserved to win.”
In the group stage, Bayern Munich lost 3/4 away matches, so overcoming Celtic is of great significance for the German team.
Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer added: “Celtic have a long unbeaten run at home and it is not easy to beat them. Celtic are dangerous from set pieces, when we are not always in good positions.
Overall, Bayern deserved to win. We didn't buckle under pressure. We could have handled certain situations better, but the team kept their composure for the most part and played intelligently.
It was really important not to concede another goal and win rather than ending the game in a draw.”

Meanwhile, Joshua Kimmich stressed that he and his teammates had moments when they lost control, when Celtic put on good pressure.
“Today, Bayern's defence played well until the end, which was very important. We defended and Manuel also made one or two great saves.
“Our focus in this game was on defense. We know how important it is to avoid mistakes in the Champions League. Bayern have learned those lessons from previous away games.”
Meanwhile, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is confident his team will do well in the away leg.
He said: "The first minute went really well for us. It was a great goal. Unfortunately it was disallowed. I think our problem in the first half was that we were too passive.
Celtic were too timid to play against a top team. This was the first time many of our players had played a Champions League knockout game.
We didn't concede too many goals but the team didn't always handle the situations well. In the second half we scored a goal and it opened up the game.
Celtic were really dangerous at that time. That's the confidence we'll take into next week's game."
The second leg between Bayern Munich vs Celtic takes place at 3:00 on February 19.
