In the early morning of July 7 (Vietnam time), tennis player Nguyen Thuy Linh suffered a 0-2 defeat to Manami Suizu (Japan) in the women's singles final of the 2025 Canada Open badminton tournament. This is the third time in her career that the No. 1 female tennis player in Vietnam has participated in the finals of a tournament in the World Tour Super 300 system of the World Badminton Federation (BWF).
Facing an opponent who had lost 2 out of 3 previous meetings, Thuy Linh entered the match cautiously, trying to create conditions to exploit Suizu's weaknesses. However, the Japanese representative showed remarkable progress, playing alertly and proactively against Thuy Linh's goals.
Many times, the tennis player born in 1997 scored beautifully, but also continuously made mistakes in self-defection, leading to a 12-21 defeat in the opening game.
In the second game, despite a good start with 3 consecutive points, Thuy Linh was quickly caught by a 21-year-old opponent. Suizu did not hesitate to extend the ball, making the most of her endurance to pressure Thuy Linh to defend.
Dangerous late shots continued to be a harmful weapon that helped the Japanese tennis player win 21-14, thereby closing the final match with a final victory of 2-0.
With this result, Nguyen Thuy Linh won the runner-up position with a prize of 9,120 USD (about 230 million VND) and 5,950 bonus points in the BWF rating system.
Meanwhile, Manami Suizu won a World Tour Super 300 for the first time, and received a prize of $18,000 (nearly VND500 million).
