On December 22, the final leg of the Viettel Marathon 2024 international race took place at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. The event welcomed 9,000 athletes from many countries and territories around the world, including track and field athletes from countries in the region.
Viettel Marathon 2024 Angkor Wat, Cambodia took place attractively in both advanced and grassroots categories. The participation of athletes created competition and drama in the advanced distances. Many top Cambodian long-distance runners also participated in the competition with 13 people.
There are notable faces such as Pheara Vann participating in the 42km distance, Khan Sreyroth competing with Nguyen Thi Oanh of Vietnam in the women's 21km event.
The Vietnamese athletics team did not send a large force to Cambodia, but they were all veterans and gold medal winners, including the champion of the Viettel Marathon in Vietnam, Nguyen Thi Oanh, Nguyen Trung Cuong - the champion of the 21km advanced category in Vietnam, Nguyen Van Lai and Bui Thu Ha - who finished third in the women's marathon in Vietnam in early December.
The Lao team sent two players to participate in the Angkor Wat stage, including Lodkeo Inthakoumman - the champion of the women's advanced marathon in Luang Prabang, Laos.
Under the beautiful weather of Siem Reap, 9,000 athletes conquered the challenge of 4 distances: marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km on the unique running track at the famous relic complex classified by UNESCO as a world heritage site.
The closing of the Angkor Wat stage marked the success of Viettel Marathon 2024 in its first organization. Viettel Marathon 2024 is a major international sporting event held for the first time in the three Indochinese countries. The tournament is organized by the Vietnam Athletics Federation in coordination with the Cambodian Olympic Committee, the Cambodian Athletics Federation and the Lao Athletics Federation. The Vietnam Military Industry and Telecommunications Group (Viettel Group) is the co-organizer and sponsor. The Asian Athletics Confederation provides consultancy and supervision.
The first stage took place in Luang Prabang, Laos with about 5,000 athletes participating in 4 distances: marathon (42.195km), half marathon (21.0975km), 10km and 5km. The Hanoi, Vietnam stage took place on December 1, with more than 10,000 participants.
Viettel Marathon 2024 will be held in 3 stages in 3 countries. The tournament is not only a normal sporting event, but also an opportunity for athletes to learn about the culture and life of local people as well as strengthen solidarity and friendship between the 3 Indochinese countries.
All three stages of Viettel Marathon meet AAA standards, with a total prize pool of up to 150,000 USD with many diverse and attractive prize categories.
