According to the plan, Thong Nhat Stadium will begin renovation from March 24 with a total investment of nearly 320 billion VND. The project is expected to be completed in 2027, of which some items will be completed around September 2026 to serve the preparation for the 2026 National Sports Games.
Currently, Ho Chi Minh City has 5 professional football clubs including Ho Chi Minh City Police, Becamex Ho Chi Minh City, Ho Chi Minh City, Van Hien University and Thanh Nien Ho Chi Minh City. Among them, Ho Chi Minh City Police, Van Hien University and Thanh Nien Ho Chi Minh City are 3 teams using Thong Nhat Stadium as their home ground and are directly affected by the stadium upgrade process.
In the National First Division League 2025-2026, Thanh Nien TPHCM club has early chosen Pleiku stadium as their home stadium since round 9. This is also a place where the team regularly trains due to the force having many young players belonging to Hoang Anh Gia Lai.
Meanwhile, Van Hien University club chose Ba Ria stadium as their home stadium in the National First Division. The fact that the two teams use this stadium together makes the schedule have to be adjusted accordingly for each round.
In the V.League 2025-2026, Ho Chi Minh City Police Club registered Binh Duong stadium as a replacing home stadium. Due to playing away from home in rounds 17 and 18, the team is expected to start playing at Binh Duong stadium from round 19, in the match against Hanoi Police on April 19.
According to the plan to organize the 2026 National Sports Games, football is likely not to be held at Thong Nhat Stadium because some items, including stand B, have not been completed in time. Matches are expected to take place at Binh Duong and Ba Ria stadiums. In case the construction progress is favorable, Thong Nhat Stadium may be considered for hosting some important matches in the final stage of the tournament.
