The Vietnamese gymnastics team competes at ASIAD 20 with 8 athletes. The force includes 5 male athletes Nguyen Van Khanh Phong, Dang Ngoc Xuan Thien, Trinh Hai Khang, Tran Dinh Vuong, Do Nam Anh and 3 female athletes Nguyen Thi Quynh Nhu, Tran Doan Quynh Nam and Huynh Thien Ly.
Among these, Khanh Phong is the person with the most outstanding achievements at the ASIAD arena. 3 years ago in Hangzhou (China), the Vietnamese athlete won a silver medal in the men's wreath event. This is also the highest achievement of Vietnamese gymnastics at ASIAD 19.
After that congress, Khanh Phong continued to compete in many international tournaments to accumulate experience. He participated in the Asian Championships in 2024, 2025, 2026, SEA Games 33, and the World Championships 2025. This year, Khanh Phong just won a Silver Medal in the rings event at the World Challenge Cup.
Along with Khanh Phong, Xuan Thien regularly participates in regional, continental and world-level tournaments. Meanwhile, Hai Khang, Dinh Vuong and Nam Anh are potential athletes, who are being given more opportunities to compete in major tournaments after a process of accumulating experience.
In the women's team, Nguyen Thi Quynh Nhu is a noteworthy face in the backstroke event. Tran Doan Quynh Nam is a familiar face in many tournaments with impressive achievements, while Huynh Thien Ly is expected to bring a new breeze.
Complete preparations, towards medal goals
The 2026 Asian Championship held in June is one of the important tournaments in the preparation process for ASIAD 20 of Vietnamese gymnastics. Here, athletes both compete for a place to participate in the congress and have the opportunity to check the tests before entering the final completion stage.
In the men's wreath event, Khanh Phong did not win a medal at the Asian tournament. The top three positions belong to Yang Haonan, Zhang Boheng (China) and Mehdi Ahmad Kohani (Iran). These are also the opponents that Khanh Phong competes against at ASIAD 20.
At that time, the coaching staff assessed that the 2026 Asian Championship was a arena where athletes focused on competing to achieve team results in order to compete for 5 men's slots to ASIAD 20. Therefore, in each singles event, the team did not have a medal. However, the performances of Vietnamese athletes maintained good technique to be able to compete at ASIAD 20.
After the tournament, the team will continue to train domestically and have time to train in China before completing the professional plan. The final stage lesson plan focuses on maintaining technical feeling, stabilizing fitness and completing the built tests.
Before the team set off, coach Truong Minh Sang said: "Basically, everyone achieved the most difficult techniques in their exercise and maintained the spirit of being ready to compete. At the 2024 Olympics, Asian countries won 7 out of 8 Gold Medals in men's gymnastics. Therefore, the Vietnamese team must try their best.
The Vietnamese team aims to compete for medals. In which, Khanh Phong's men's rings and backstroke are the events that the coaching staff expects. However, before thinking about medals, athletes must achieve good enough results to win the right to enter the final.
Player Khanh Phong expressed his determination: "We have prepared tests with technical scores equivalent to other teams as well as the host to be able to compete for medals. Currently, my spirit as well as everyone in the team is very high. I will try to strive to maintain the old achievement of the Silver Medal at ASIAD 19 and if I am luckier, I can change the color of the medal".
At ASIAD 20, gymnastics competed in 8 men's events including team, individual all-around, freestyle, rings, backstroke, ring horse, horizontal bar and parallel bar. Women had 6 events including team, individual all-around, backstroke, crossbar, balance bridge and freestyle.
