Deputy Minister Tran Van Thuan wished the doctors at Vinmec International General Hospital success in performing the complex surgery on striker Xuan Son. The Deputy Minister also hoped that Xuan Son would soon return to competition.
The visit is not only a word of encouragement for Xuan Son but also affirms the attention of the Ministry of Health's leaders to the remarkable development of Vietnamese sports medicine.
The surgery for striker Xuan Son ended at 9:43 p.m. on January 6. Striker number 12 was awake, had no pain, and began to move his toes lightly right after the surgery.
Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Dung, Director of Orthopedic and Musculoskeletal Traumatology (Vinmec Healthcare System) directly directed the surgery with his colleagues and successfully performed the surgery.
“Xuan Son’s injury was quite severe, with two very large fractures, one 7cm and one 3cm. With the goal of helping the player recover quickly, especially in the ability to heal the bone, we performed a closed intramedullary nailing technique to ensure that the anatomy was maintained, the broken pieces were not displaced, and the fracture socket did not have to be opened. The surgery was closely monitored by a C-arm (intraoperative X-ray machine) to ensure the requirements of anatomy, correction, and fixation. The surgery was a great success,” said Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Dung.
After surgery, Xuan Son was alert, pain-free, and able to move his toes slightly. However, he still needed comprehensive monitoring and coordination of soft tissue injuries. Xuan Son will enter the process of physical therapy and rehabilitation, combined with a personalized nutritional regimen, suitable for each stage of recovery.
Assessing the health status of striker Xuan Son, Prof. Dr. Tran Trung Dung shared: "The opportunity for Xuan Son to return to top sports is completely possible. In terms of surgical techniques, there is nothing too complicated. However, surgery only accounts for 10% of the process, while 90% of recovery depends on the work behind it."
Professor Dung added: "For injuries related to joints and ligaments, recovery can sometimes depend on luck. However, in the case of Xuan Son's fracture, as long as the bone heals well and recovers properly, the ability to return to 100% form is completely possible."
Nguyen Xuan Son, the top scorer and best player of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2024, suffered a serious injury in the second leg of the final against Thailand. Xuan Son has completed surgery at Vinmec Times City International General Hospital.
After conducting in-depth examinations and consultation, experts determined that Xuan Son's injury was more serious than initially reported. The consultation results recorded: Xuan Son had a complex closed fracture of the middle third of the two tibia bones, with two large separate fragments.
Doctors at the Center for Orthopedics and Sports Medicine (Vinmec International General Hospital) decided to perform closed bone fusion surgery using intramedullary nails with pins under the fluoroscopy monitor. This is a minimally invasive surgical solution, helping to minimize soft tissue damage and ensure quick recovery.
Previously, on the evening of January 5, immediately after receiving first aid at the field, player Xuan Son was taken for an X-ray, and the team's medical team conducted a remote consultation with experts from the Vinmec Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Center to find a treatment plan. After discussing and agreeing on the best plan with the player and his family, the leaders of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) decided to bring Xuan Son back to Vietnam for surgery. At 2:30 p.m. on January 6, Xuan Son was picked up from the airport and taken straight to the hospital for treatment.
