This information is stated in the draft plan for the implementation of the urban railway system sent by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, after the National Assembly passed Resolution 188, allowing the city to apply a number of specific mechanisms and policies to speed up the implementation progress.
Metro Line 2 was approved in 2010 with an initial total investment of VND26,000 billion. By 2019, the project's capital had been adjusted to increase to nearly VND47,900 billion.
The entire route is more than 11 km long, of which 9.2 km is underground, the rest is elevated and the road leading to Tham Luong depot (District 12). The project includes 9 underground stations and 1 elevated station.
Previously, the plan to exploit Metro Line 2 was set for 2026. However, due to many problems related to site clearance and investment procedures, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has adjusted the completion time to 2030.
The Metro Line 2 project was previously funded by ODA capital from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the German Construction Fund (KfW) and the European Investment Bank (EIB).
However, by the end of 2024, Ho Chi Minh City decided to use the city budget to continue implementing the project, instead of continuing to borrow ODA capital.
According to the draft of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, from now until mid-2025, Metro No. 2 project will complete the survey, overall technical design (FEED) and feasibility study documents for appraisal.
Ho Chi Minh City aims to approve the project's feasibility study report in September, organize the selection of a contractor for construction in October and start construction in December 2025.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board, the site clearance work for Metro Line 2 project has reached 99.83%, with 584/585 cases handed over. The remaining problem is the District 3 Police headquarters, which is waiting to complete the handover procedures between the Ministry of Public Security and the Ho Chi Minh City Police, expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025.
In addition, the relocation of technical infrastructure at 12/12 station locations and open excavation sections is also being implemented simultaneously, including electricity, telecommunications, water supply and drainage, lighting and trees.
The Urban Railway Management Board said it will speed up the construction progress, completing the relocation of infrastructure in the third quarter of 2025.
Metro Line 2 is the second urban railway line in Ho Chi Minh City, after Metro Line 1 (Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien) which was commercially operated by the end of 2024.
When completed, Metro Line 2 will connect the city center with the Northwest, contributing to reducing traffic pressure on main roads such as Cach Mang Thang Tam, Truong Chinh, Cong Hoa, ...
