On August 9, Politburo Member, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man will lead a high-level delegation of the Party and State of Vietnam to pay respects to Politburo Member, National Assembly Chairman of Laos Xaysomphone Phomvihane in Vientiane, Laos. Information provided by the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the morning of August 9.
Previously, the Central Executive Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, together with the National Assembly, Government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, the Central Committee of the Lao Front for National Construction and the family of Phomvihane issued a special notice stating that Member of the Politburo of the Party Central Committee, Chairman of the National Assembly of the Lao People's Democratic Republic Xaysomphone Phomvihane passed away at 11:18 am on August 8, 2026, due to severe vascular disease, at the age of 70.
The press release emphasized that Comrade Xaysomphone Phomvihane is one of the key leaders of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, a person with knowledge, capacity, sensitivity and rich experience, who has held leadership positions in localities and many industries and fields; is a leader with many outstanding achievements.
Throughout his life of activities, he has dedicated his intelligence and strength to the revolutionary cause of the Party, to the cause of national development and the prosperous and happy life of the people of all ethnic groups in Laos.
To honor the merits and express deep condolences to Comrade Xaysomphone Phomvihane, the Central Committee of the Party, the National Assembly, the Government of the Lao People's Democratic Republic and the Central Committee of the Lao Front for National Construction decided to organize a national mourning for 5 days, from August 9-13, 2026, at the National Convention Center.
The memorial service will be held on August 13, 2026 at That Luang Square.
