Strengthening Vietnam - Laos strategic trust

The official visit to Laos by Politburo member and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man took place right before the 45th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA 45), which Laos is hosting. This is a good opportunity to further strengthen strategic trust and expand parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

At the invitation of Lao National Assembly Chairman and AIPA President Saysomphone Phomvihane, Politburo member and National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man led a high-ranking delegation of the Vietnamese National Assembly to pay an official visit to Laos and attend the 45th AIPA General Assembly from October 17 to 19.

This is the first official visit of National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man to Laos in his new position, aiming to concretize the agreement between the senior leaders of the two Parties and the two countries of Vietnam and Laos, affirming the consistent policy of the Party and State of Vietnam to always give the highest priority and attach importance to developing the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos; at the same time, enhancing trust and attachment between the senior leaders of the two countries.

Sharing with VNA about the visit to Laos by National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, Vietnamese Ambassador to Laos Nguyen Minh Tam emphasized: "The visit is not only a good opportunity to further strengthen strategic trust and expand parliamentary cooperation between the two countries, but also demonstrates the continued implementation of the policy of proactively and actively integrating comprehensively and deeply into the international community, raising the level of multilateral diplomacy; affirming the role of the Vietnamese National Assembly, proactively and actively contributing substantially to the content of AIPA...".

Ambassador Nguyen Minh Tam added that in the context of the world and regional situation continuing to have rapid, complex and unpredictable developments, deeply affecting countries, including Vietnam and Laos, the solidarity and mutual assistance between the two Parties, two States, two National Assemblies of Vietnam and Laos is an objective factor, a historical law, one of the greatest sources of strength and of vital significance to the cause of national construction and protection of each country, contributing to preserving and developing the great friendship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and Laos.

In an interview with the press about the visit of National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly's Foreign Affairs Committee Le Thu Ha said: "Vietnam plans to propose 4 initiatives/resolutions at the AIPA Young Parliamentarians' Conference, the Social Committee, the AIPA Women Parliamentarians' Conference, and the Economic Committee". These include the Resolution on "Strengthening the role of young ASEAN parliamentarians in implementing the Declaration of the 9th Global Meeting of Young Parliamentarians on promoting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals through digital transformation and innovation"; Resolution on "Enhancing rights, social welfare and employment opportunities for older people in the ASEAN region"; Resolution on "Promoting the elimination of violence against women and girls in ASEAN"; Resolution on "Enhancing institutional capacity to connect transport, aviation and seaports in the ASEAN region".

"The Vietnamese delegation considered co-sponsoring 6 resolutions; of which 5 were proposed by Laos, and 1 resolution was proposed by Indonesia, Laos and Malaysia," Ms. Le Thu Ha added.

These resolutions include: Strengthening the role of Parliaments in promoting connectivity and harmonious development of ASEAN through political-security cooperation; The role of Parliaments in promoting green capital mobilization for sustainable infrastructure development towards the ASEAN Community Vision 2025; Promoting the role of Parliaments in smart healthcare innovation; Increasing the interest of Parliaments towards building a sustainable, connected and inclusive ASEAN Community; Empowering youth in building a safe, sustainable and inclusive ASEAN Community; The role of Parliaments in supporting the implementation of ASEAN towards promoting responsible investment in the agriculture, food and forestry sectors.
